SBP Maintains Cautious Monetary Policy, Focuses on Economic Stability

The State Bank of Pakistan adopts a cautious approach on interest rates, emphasizing economic stability over aggressive cuts.

The State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) has reaffirmed its commitment to a cautious monetary policy, signaling that aggressive interest rate cuts are unlikely despite requests from the prime minister for more extensive easing measures.

Governor Jameel Ahmad noted that the country has transitioned past the most critical phase of its economic challenges and is now experiencing a period of relative stability. This positive trend is characterized by improving external accounts, a moderation in inflation, and a bolstering of foreign exchange reserves, with expectations of continued stability over the next two years.

The SBP has completed the initial phase of its economic stabilization program and is shifting its focus towards supporting development finance initiatives that promote long-term growth and enhance productive sectors. However, Ahmad cautioned that significant reductions in the policy rate could reignite inflation and undermine recent macroeconomic improvements.

Recent economic indicators reflect significant progress, with the current account deficit—which peaked at 4.7 percent of GDP in 2022—expected to remain balanced or in slight surplus. Inflation rates have stabilized between 5 and 7 percent, and foreign exchange reserves have improved alongside rising import levels.

To bolster exporters and stimulate industrial activity, the government has implemented various supportive measures, including reduced electricity tariffs and adjustments to the Export Finance Scheme. The SBP also highlighted that ongoing reliance on the International Monetary Fund will hinge on maintaining fiscal discipline as Pakistan navigates its current $7 billion Extended Fund Facility program, projected to conclude by late 2027.
