Federal Cabinet Approves National Housing Policy 2026 and Action Plan

The federal cabinet has approved the National Housing Policy 2026, emphasizing zoning compliance and vertical construction.

The federal cabinet convened on Monday in Islamabad under the leadership of Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif to approve the National Housing Policy 2026, along with a detailed action plan for its implementation. The policy aims to ensure adherence to zoning laws in housing projects, with a particular emphasis on vertical construction to optimize land use.

During the meeting, it was revealed that the policy was developed by a working group comprising both national and international experts, with input from various federal ministries, provincial governments, and development partners. Its primary goal is to provide sustainable, safe, and quality housing for all citizens.

In addition to zoning compliance and vertical construction, the cabinet directed that energy-efficiency codes be integrated into the National Housing Policy. This is intended to ensure that new constructions meet energy-efficient and environmentally friendly standards.

The cabinet also discussed the progress of the prime minister’s Apna Ghar scheme, noting that banks have approved loans totaling Rs220 billion for applicants aiming to build or purchase homes, with over Rs32 billion already disbursed to successful candidates.

In related decisions, the cabinet approved the withdrawal of a notice terminating the 1981 bilateral investment treaty with Sweden and endorsed proposed amendments to the Pakistan Oil Refining Policy 2023, aimed at upgrading oil refineries to better meet the country’s energy needs.
